- Here is a helpful hint on using "FLASH" with a Hayes-compatible
- modem. If you would like to have your modem automatically re-dial the
- number when no "Carrier Signal" is detected, without an overly-long
- wait (the default of FLASH is 30 seconds!), then read on...
-
- 1. Determine the "delay" (in seconds) between the dialing
- process of your modem and the "carrier detect" signal
- (usually CONNECT) that is returned by the BBS.
-
- 2. The Hayes Command Register (S7) is assigned to the time delay
- (in seconds) that the modem will wait until it receives
- the "carrier signal" before aborting.
-
- 3. Let's assume that you want to log-on to your local BBS,
- and that the phone number is 555-1212.
-
- 4. Let's also assume that from experience, you have determined
- that it takes about 10 seconds to connect with the BBS
- after you initiate the dial command.
-
- 5. Set up the FLASH "Dial Directory" phone number to read:
-
- 555-1212;S7=10O
-
- 6. Here is a breakdown of the dial command:
-
- a) 555-1212 -- Auto dial 555-1212...
-
- b) ; -- The modem goes "off-line" and...
-
- c) S7=0 -- Loads the modem register "S7" with a
- value of 10 seconds (the modem waits for 10
- seconds for a response "carrier" from the other
- modem)...
-
- d) O (oh) -- The modem goes back on-line to wait for
- the carrier for 10 seconds before "re-dialing".
-
- e) If a "carrier" signal is recieved by your modem
- it will go "on-line" and send a "CONNECT"
- message. If not, it will send a "NO CARRIER"
- message and look to the FLASH default to find
- out how many times you want to "re-dial" the BBS
- number before giving up.
-
- 7. NOTE: Be sure that you end the "Dial Directory" command
- with a CAPITAL O (oh)... NOT A 0 (zero)! That is what
- puts the modem back to "on-line" status!
-
-
- If you really want to get the best out of FLASH and your modem,
- then check out the "QuikCard" quick-reference card designed especially
- for FLASH, by "HIRED HAND GRAPHICS" (916 NE 10th Street, Grants Pass,
- Oregon 97526).
- The card sells for only $7.95 (+$1.50 shipping) direct from the
- company, and includes a complete set of the "command-level" & "Alt-key"
- commands, as well as a special space right above the function keys,
- to enter your "function key macro" labels. They also include two extra
- "function key macro" cards for your use.
- The cards slip between the top of the function keys and the
- computer case, and don't get in the way of keyboard use. They are
- printed on sturdy stock, and are scored so that they can be adjusted to
- any convenient viewing angle.
- The company also offers a "Bonus Pak" of QuikCards that support
- the PD word processor "ST-Writer", and the popular "ST-Talk"
- terminal program. Both of these QuikCards are in the same package, and
- sell for only $5.95 for the pair.
- If you can't find these QuikCards at your local dealer, they can
- be ordered by mail order from SERIOUS SOFTWARE (probably at a
- discount!). SERIOUS SOFTWARE carries only ATARI ST hardware and
- software, so know what works best! They can be reached at 1-800-782-7007.
